Rainbow Rice

A little while back I made rainbow rice for the boy, from the Happy Hooligans post – using vinegar as the fixer, liquid food colouring, and tupperware. Very effective! Took quite a bit of food colouring to get vibrant colours. It dried very quickly – it was all done by the next morning. It does smell quite vinegary, but it’ snot too bad.

This has been one of the most successful and engaging activities we’ve tried for the boy. He happily scooped and poured it for about an hour the first time it was put out. It was messy, but it’s laminate floor, so easy to sweep up. Here’s a tip though – sweep the floor before you play with it, so when you sweep it up and put it back in a storage tub you’re not scooping up all sorts of other dirt and debris with it.

We now have a box of mixed rainbow rice, which he frequently asks for. We tend not to get it out, though, if he’s in the kind of mood where he’s just going to throw it across the room then get bored in 5min. This has happened a few times…
